Crowns

Restore your teeth!

Crowns are a form of restorative treatment for damaged teeth. They are also known as caps because they fit over the damaged tooth structure. Crowns are designed to strengthen teeth that are decayed or damaged and prevent further harm. Crowns can be created from various materials, including ceramic materials such as porcelain and ceramic fused with metal, and precious metals (including gold). Porcelain crowns are highly sought after because they can create a white smile that is natural but glossy.

Why choose a dental crown?

A crown is recommended if a tooth incurs damage as a result of trauma or injury. You may also need a new crown if you have had root canal treatment. If you have a cavity and it is too large for a filling, a crown is a good option. Crowns may also be beneficial for people who have damaged and worn teeth as a result of teeth grinding or clenching. The aim of a crown is to make the tooth stronger and avert further damage or decay. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic reasons, to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the smile.

What does the treatment involve?

The procedure to fit a crown is usually completed in two appointments. During the first session we will prepare the tooth by removing decayed or damaged tooth tissue and cleaning the tooth. We will then create an impression to be used by the laboratory technicians as a template for your new crown. During this interval a temporary crown will be applied to the teeth, after which we will fit the permanent crown and check that you are happy with the new restoration.

The colour of the crown will be matched to your natural teeth to ensure that the crown is indistinguishable from the rest of your teeth.
